Le Chéile Mentoring was established in 2005 to provide a Mentoring service to children and young people aged 12-18 years engaged in Young Persons Probation (YPP). Le Chéile is a child-centred service which recruits and trains volunteers from local communities to work with young people and families. Having since expanded to work with young people aged 12-21 years and up to 23 years if suitable. They also encompass a Parent Mentoring service for parents of young people who are involved with YPP. Le Chéile also support families by funding the Strengthening Families Programme on behalf of the Probation Service. Le Chéile is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Social Fund.
Like everybody, Le Chéile Mentoring experienced a year like no other in 2020. It was a tough year for vulnerable young people and for families, especially during the various lockdowns. Le Chéile responded by doing everything they could to keep mentoring going, supporting young people and families in innovative ways and keeping connected with their volunteer mentors. Over 200 young people and over 100 parents were supported through mentoring, Restorative Justice and parenting programmes.
